What Fits the Life I’m Creating?

There comes a point when clarity is less about figuring out what we can do and more about deciding what deserves us.

Our time, attention, emotional energy, and presence are some of the most valuable things we have. Yet it is easy to spend them without much thought. We say yes because we always have. We respond because someone asked. We continue routines because they are familiar. Slowly, our lives can fill with things that require our energy but give very little back.

Discernment asks us to look at this differently.

It is not simply deciding between right and wrong. Often, both choices may be perfectly reasonable. Discernment is the quieter practice of asking: Is this right for me, right now?

What deserves my attention?

What deserves a place in this season of my life?

And just as importantly: What no longer does?

There are things we once needed that we may have outgrown. Commitments that once made sense may no longer fit the woman we are becoming. Relationships may need different boundaries. Habits that once brought comfort may now feel draining. Even roles we have carried proudly—caretaker, organizer, problem-solver, peacemaker—can begin to take more energy than we want to give them.

Sometimes we continue simply because we have never given ourselves permission to reconsider. Sometimes, the need for the task has passed, but we continue on out of habit.

Discernment gives us permission to stop.

It invites us to notice where our energy goes and how we feel afterward. What leaves us energized, curious, peaceful, or connected? What consistently leaves us depleted, resentful, or scattered?

Our energy can be remarkably honest.

When something repeatedly drains us, that does not necessarily mean it is bad or that we must remove it from our lives. But it may deserve a closer look. Perhaps the commitment needs to change. Perhaps the boundary or expectation needs to change. Or perhaps it is simply time to say, This no longer belongs in the life I am creating.

Saying no can be an important part of discernment.

For many women, “no” can feel uncomfortable. We worry about disappointing someone or wonder whether we are being selfish. But every yes carries a cost.

When we say yes to something that consumes our time, we are also choosing not to spend that time somewhere else. When we give emotional energy to a problem that is not ours to solve, that energy is unavailable for something that matters deeply to us.

A thoughtful “no” can create space for a much more meaningful “yes”.

Maybe that yes is time with someone you love. Maybe it’s travel, creativity, friendship, learning, solitude, rest, or finally beginning something that has quietly been calling to you.

Discernment is not about creating an empty life. It is about creating an intentional one.

The question becomes less How can I fit everything in? and more What do I want my life to contain?

When we begin choosing intentionally, our calendars can become reflections of our values. The way we spend our days begins to express who we are rather than simply responding to what everyone else wants from us.

Ask yourself:

How much of my time is spent on things that genuinely matter to me?

Where am I operating from habit instead of intention?

What am I still giving attention to simply because I always have?

What would I make room for if I stopped giving so much energy to things that no longer deserve it?

These questions do not require immediate answers. Discernment is rarely loud or rushed. Often the answer arrives slowly—through a sense of relief, a feeling of lightness, or a quiet knowing that something fits or no longer fits.

Perhaps the intention for this month is simply to notice.

Notice what you are excited to say yes to.

Notice the obligations that make your energy drop before you even begin them.

Notice the moments when you feel most like yourself.

Then begin choosing from there.

Your time does not simply have to be filled. It can be chosen.

Your attention can be chosen.

Your energy can be chosen.

And little by little, those choices become the life you are creating.

With warmth and love,

Theresa

Success Is What We Say No To

I remember the first time I heard someone say that phrase “success is what we say “no” to. It sounded so counter-intuitive. And other attendees at the conference agreed. When we say “yes” and show up with a can do attitude, don’t we do better? As it turns our, I’ve come to understand that the answer to that question is no. We don’t. We do better when we know what truly matters to us. When we work to our strengths and not our weaknesses. When we eliminate the distractions that allow us to focus on what we genuinely want and need. That kind of discernment matters.

Something shifted in me when I got that distinction. Somehow I started to see the “no’s” I was saying as keeping the weeds out of my garden of ideas and productivity. And, when I forget to say “no”, life reminds me that I’m getting off track.

Are there things that you are agreeing to do because you think you ought to? Things you do because you are afraid of disappointing someone? Things that you know you are likely to resent later?

Saying yes when you really want to say “no” is a great way to start thinking less of yourself. I have seen many people drop their self esteem because of just that. It’s also a great way to put a wedge in between what would otherwise be a healthy friendship or work relationship. We act differently when we say yes and mean no. And other people can feel that, even if they don’t call you on it because it would be awkward.

Maybe it’s time to sit back and ask yourself which things actually deserve my attention? And which things don’t. One of the best ways to honor yourself – and the relationships you are in – is to have the clarity to make clean decisions and to communicate them clearly.

What are you ready to stop carrying?

One of the quiet gifts of self-awareness is realizing that not everything deserves our energy simply because it asks for it. There will always be another request, another responsibility, another conversation, another problem that could occupy our attention. Discernment allows us to pause long enough to ask a different question: Does this deserve a place in my life right now?

Sometimes the most meaningful change does not come from adding something new. It comes from noticing what we are ready to stop carrying. What can you say no to without guilt? What obligation has become more habit than choice? What are you continuing to give emotional energy to even though it no longer feels meaningful? Creating space is not selfish. Space gives us room to hear ourselves again.

Then comes the more interesting question: What deserves that space instead? Perhaps it’s time with people who make you feel fully yourself. Maybe it is creativity, travel, learning, movement, quiet mornings, meaningful conversations, or simply time to think. When we become more intentional about where our energy goes, the way we spend our days begins to reflect who we actually are.

This month, pay attention to the moments when you feel most present, peaceful, curious, or alive. They may be telling you something. Discernment is not always about making dramatic changes. Sometimes it is simply choosing, a little more often, to give your time and attention to the things that feel like an authentic expression of you.

Best,

Theresa

The Self-Check

Set aside ten quiet minutes with a journal or piece of paper. This is not about making dramatic decisions. It is simply an opportunity to notice where your energy is going—and whether those choices still feel aligned with who you are now.

Minute 1–2: Notice Where Your Energy Goes

Without overthinking, write down the things that have been taking up the most space in your life lately. Include not only what takes your time, but also what occupies your thoughts and emotional energy.

Consider:

  • What has been receiving most of my attention lately?
  • What do I find myself thinking about repeatedly?
  • What obligations, relationships, worries, or responsibilities are taking up the most energy?
  • What am I giving attention to simply because I always have?

Don’t judge your answers. Just notice them.

Minute 3–4: Pay Attention to How It Feels

Look back over what you wrote. Beside each item, make a simple mark:

+ if it generally gives you energy, meaning, peace, connection, or satisfaction.
– if it generally leaves you depleted, resentful, anxious, scattered, or heavy.
? if you are not quite sure.

Then ask yourself:

  • What deserves the energy I am giving it?
  • What may be receiving more of me than it deserves?
  • What no longer feels like an expression of who I am today?

Sometimes our energy recognizes the answer before our mind does.

Minute 5–6: Find One Place to Say No

Now look at the things marked with a – or ?.

Choose just one and ask:

What could I say no to, do less of, delegate, release, or simply stop worrying about?

Your answer doesn’t need to be something enormous. It might be declining an invitation, stepping away from a responsibility someone else can handle, ending an unnecessary routine, limiting a draining conversation, or deciding that a problem simply isn’t yours to solve.

Complete this sentence:

I am ready to give less energy to ______________________________.

Then:

Doing so would create more room for ______________________________.

Minute 7–8: Decide What Deserves More of You

Now turn your attention toward what you want to move toward, rather than simply what you want to move away from.

Ask yourself:

  • What makes me feel most like myself?
  • What have I been saying I want more time for?
  • What brings me curiosity, connection, peace, creativity, or joy?
  • What deserves more of my attention in this season of my life?
  • If my calendar reflected what matters most to me, what would appear on it more often?

Complete:

I want to give more of my time and energy to ______________________________.

Minute 9: Make One Intentional Choice

Choose one small action you can take this week.

Keep it specific and manageable.

Perhaps you will protect one quiet morning, make a phone call you’ve been wanting to make, decline something you don’t really want to attend, take a walk without your phone, spend an hour creating something, or put something meaningful on your calendar before the space gets filled by something else.

Write:

This week, I will intentionally ______________________________.

Minute 10: Listen

For the final minute, stop writing.

Sit quietly and consider this question:

If I trusted myself completely, what would I already know deserves my energy—and what would I know is ready to be released?

Don’t force an answer.

Sometimes discernment doesn’t arrive as a perfectly formed thought. It may simply feel like relief. Lightness. Curiosity. Resistance. Excitement. A quiet yes or an equally quiet no.

Pay attention.

A Thought to Carry With You

Discernment is not about filling your life with only easy or enjoyable things. It is about becoming more conscious of what you choose to carry.

You don’t have to change everything today.

Just notice.

Then choose one thing a little more intentionally.
